Heat rash means small red bumps. It erupts on the skin when your baby is over heated. We commonly know it as “prickly heat”. They may appear red usually on light skin. They can emerge in children of any age but more commonly in babies.
It appears on the folds of your baby or the parts of his body where the clothing is tight. The areas such as stomach, crotch, neck, buttocks, etc. where the skin is more in the contact with the cloth are more effected.
Hot and humid weather is the peak time for this allergy. At this time your baby sweats too much and when the skin is not cool and dried properly. The pores of your baby skin are filled with sweat. There pores are much smaller than adults so the sweat cannot get out and your baby gets heat rash.
Heat rash is not dangerous but it can lead to the serious conditions such as heat stroke. It is not painful either but can be itchy. You can protect your baby from heat rash by not covering him with too many clothes. You should wash him daily and dry him thoroughly.
But if your baby has caught it you should treat him immediately. Remove his dress. Move your baby in an airy and cool place. clean his body with wet cotton cloth. You can give him a bath with a pinch of baking soda in small quantity of lukewarm water. it will help. Do not rub his skin with a towel, let it be dried via air. Don't use any cream or medicine on the rashes because moisture can make it worse.
Use air conditioner in the baby room. Don't chill him so he may catch cold. You want only cool and dried atmosphere for your baby. Your baby's nails should be trimmed so he cannot scratch his body if he feels itching.
You can prevent your baby from heat rash by using only cotton dresses in humid or warm weather. Don't use plastic nappies or panties. You shouldn't use talcum powder on baby skin but dust him with some cornstarch. Don't overheat him. Always check his body heat by touching his skin with your hand. If it is sweating or damp he is over heated. Whenever you hold your baby, make sure that you are not wearing synthetics or rough clothes. Keep him highly hydrated with water or mother feed.
If he is not getting better from heat rash after all this first aid go and visit his pediatrics. Because he shouldn't get any fever.
Heat rash is a common symptom but one should know the difference between heat rash and the other skin rashes such as eczema, impetigo, etc. heat rash should be treated properly. When the baby is overheated his pores get blocked with sweat and rupture sometimes.
Prickly heat is the most common type of heat rash. In this type of rash pores get inflamed and they may cause stinging type of itching. They look like small red bumps group together under the sensitive areas where the air doesn't pass well such as the folds of the body, around the groin, neck, etc. You just have to prevent your child from over heating, over dressing, etc. but if he catches by it you should use and cool weather, dry atmosphere and if needed then use calamine lotion. But avoid from any other ointment or greasy thing which can make the case even worse.
